This module helped me better understand the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and how both play important roles in student learning. Intrinsic motivation comes from within—students are driven by curiosity, interest, or personal satisfaction. Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, relies on external rewards like grades, praise, or even consequences.
What stood out to me most was how powerful intrinsic motivation can be when we intentionally nurture it. When students are genuinely interested in what they're learning or see real-world relevance, they engage more deeply and retain information longer. That said, I also recognize that extrinsic motivators can be… >>>
This module made me reflect on how important it is to find the right balance between student autonomy and digital security in today's learning environments. As we incorporate more technology into our teaching—especially through models like the flipped classroom—students are given more freedom to learn at their own pace and in their own space. While this promotes independence and ownership of learning, it also raises real concerns about how we protect their data, ensure safe platforms, and teach responsible digital behavior.
One key takeaway for me is that supporting student autonomy doesn't mean stepping back completely. It means guiding students… >>>
I learned from this module that it is highly important for the students to feel safe and overall comfortable in class for the best outcome of their learning. I definitely want to work towards creating the best possible environment for my students each time they walk through the door to my classroom.
Motivation by design is acquired by each person depending on the reward.
being confident in the field to be studied that day, while bringing up your own job experiences good, or bad, even funny is a good way to get a class asking questions about the subject at hand.
no two students are the same. Understanding this when getting to know each student you will learn the best combination for keeping that student engaged in class, and not frustrated in the lab. Keeping students walking down the path of success with encouraging words, lifting confidents little by little will help produce the empowerment to accomplish, and overcome any road block in life.
Let's start with extrinsic motivator. As most students like to get reward for doing the least amount of work, this would be a good category. However, if doing the task each time just to get a reward, this would not be considered as healthy learning.
On the other hand, an intrinsic learner will do what it takes to be successful without thinking about a reward, and that is why this class of motivators are always successful.
From this module I have concluded that students learn best when they are secure within themselves, as well as when they have some form of autonomy. If students are being told what to do all the time without getting the students' input, they will never feel like they are part of the learning process.
I agree that it comes down to the matters of the heart. If you love what you are teaching that will be relayed to your students which could become contagious in that they will also love what they do.
Positive reinforcement goes a long way. As instructor working on a student self-esteem is crucial.
