CM270 - Compliance: Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA)

This course is designed as a guide for massage and esthetics programs seeking initial and continued accreditation with the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation. It also provides additional training for COMTA reviewers and staff. The course describes the Commission's compliance standards, as well as how to effectively and efficiently complete Self-Study Reports to avoid the most common missteps in the accreditation process.

Pre-requisite: Participants must have first completed the free webinar available on the COMTA website which introduces the accreditation process.

Module 1: Overview of COMTA Compliance

  • Describe the value of self-study for the institution and the Commission.
  • Recognize the language of COMTA Standards 3.0-9.0.
  • Explain the intention behind each of these Standards.
  • Identify common challenges associated with compliance to these Standards, either in practice or in developing the Self-Study Report.
  • Identify 'best practices' associated with compliance to these Standards, either in practice or in developing the Self-Study Report.
  • Analyze how your particular institution or program currently complies with Standards 3.0-9.0.

Module 2: Curriculum & Instruction Compliance (Standard 2.0)

  • Recognize the language of COMTA Mission Standard 1.0.
  • Recognize the language of COMTA Curriculum Standard 2.0.
  • Explain the intention behind each of these Standards.
  • Identify common challenges associated with compliance to these Standards, either in practice or in developing the Self-Study Report.
  • Identify 'best practices' associated with compliance to these Standards, either in practice or in developing the Self-Study Report.
  • Analyze how your particular institution or program currently complies with Standards 1.0 & 2.0.

Module 3: Massage & Aesthetic Curriculum Competencies

  • Describe the philosophy of Competency-Based Curriculum.
  • Explain how to complete the COMTA Competency Chart correctly.
  • Align competency language (verbs) to appropriate assessment pieces.
  • Identify the language of all six competencies and important aspects of relevant compliance.
  • Analyze the level at which your curriculum currently meets the competency requirements (in instruction and assessment) and, if necessary, generate ideas for compliance.

Module 4: Specialized Standards: Distance Education (2.9) & Degree Programs (10.0)

  • Recognize the language of COMTA Distance Education Standard 2.9.
  • Identify common challenges & best practices associated with compliance to Standard 2.9, either in practice or in developing the Self-Study Report.
  • Recognize the language of COMTA Degree Standard 10.0.
  • Distinguish between a certificate program and a degree program.
  • Distinguish between an Occupational Degree and an Academic Degree.
  • Identify common challenges & best practices associated with compliance to Standard 10.0, either in practice or in developing the Self-Study Report.
